Scandinavian style - Norwegian customs knife

Skandinavisk stil - Norsk tollekniv

In Norway, the knife as a tool has long stood strong, especially in the form of the customs knife, the Norwegian, traditional sheath knife that has been in daily use by Norwegians for many years. The knifemaking tradition in Norway has often been characterized by a division where one blacksmith makes the blade, and another craftsman makes the handle and scabbard. The blade has traditionally been laminated in three layers with a hard egg steel surrounded by tougher steel on each side. The handle is generally made of wood with a simple but functional shape.

Contrary to many cases in modern American-inspired knife culture, the sheath is often considered as important as the knife. The scabbards are therefore often marked with carvings, pauting, coloring or the like. Today there are many skilled knife makers in Norway, and the material used covers the entire spectrum from the ordinary to the noble. Knifemaker Terje F. Løken has here created a utility knife with a blade of solid steel, a shaft of valbirch and a sheath with tasteful decoration. True Scandinavian design.

Below we see a knife from bergedahl.com , which has made a knife in a traditional shape, but used somewhat more expensive material. The blade is mosaic damask made by Vladic Daniluk, the shaft is stabilized mammoth and silver pewter. The sheath is two-coloured and fully patterned.
