Hardness testing made simple
This set of hardness-testing files from Tsubosan in Japan lets you estimate the hardness of metal surfaces, including flat, curved and inside surfaces. The curved tips help reach difficult shapes.
How to use the files
- Start with the black file, marked about 65 HRC, and lightly scratch the test material. If it leaves a mark, the material is softer than that file.
- Continue with the blue file, marked about 60 HRC. If it does not mark the material, the material is harder than the blue file and lies approximately between the blue and black test levels.
- If the blue file still marks the material, continue with the green file, marked about 55 HRC, and then use lower-hardness files until you find the point where a file no longer marks the surface. This gives an approximate hardness range.
Color-coded hardness levels
- Red: HRC 40–42 (HV 392–412)
- Yellow: HRC 45–47 (HV 446–471)
- Light green: HRC 50–52 (HV 513–544)
- Green: HRC 55–57 (HV 595–633)
- Blue: HRC 60–62 (HV 697–746)
- Black: HRC 64–66 (HV 800–865)
Practical design
The files are made of quality steel, with color-coded handles for quick identification and a comfortable grip. Curved tips make it easier to test flat, convex and concave surfaces. They are useful for large workpieces, specialty steels and situations where a conventional hardness-testing machine is unavailable. The files can also remove light rust from a test area before measuring.
In the box
- Six files covering approximately HRC 40–66
- Color-coded handles
- Sturdy black storage case
A practical set for knife makers, blacksmiths, metalworkers and others who need a quick approximate check of metal hardness.
