What is Viking (R996)?

Norton's most solid belts for rough work, which last longer and cut faster than the competitor P963. Well suited to grinding both hardened steel, wood and composite. As the belt is used, the grains are crushed and new sharp grains emerge. Norton's market-leading coarse grinding belts. 120 grit is R976 which is the same belt but with coolant that makes it easier to grind with less heat generation, i.e. cooler grinding with finer grit.

What is Cubitron?

Cubitron is 3M's top series in sanding belts, where the ceramic version competes with Viking from Norton. Which is best depends on who you ask. Some swear by Viking, others by Cubitron. We therefore recommend that you test both and find your favorite. Cubitron, however, leads in high grit, because it comes in 180 grit, while Viking stops at 120 grit before you should move on to the Norax series.

What is R350 Flex?

Aluminum oxide abrasive on a more flexible canvas that makes the belt softer and thinner and it bends more to the material being sanded. Great for rounding off shafts, sanding inner radii and other organic shapes.

What is Film SA331?

Thin Film belts with aluminum oxide (SA331). Can be used, for example, to achieve the final finish on shafts, or as an extra good starting point for hand polishing. Well suited for finishing of steel, wood and composite.

What is Shredder?

Red ceramic belts with extra long durability , suitable for heavy duty use and perfect for rough work . This is the same abrasive that is marketed under the name Shredder .

What is Alox?

Aluminum oxide belts are great for fine grinding of both wood, composite and metals for a low price. Works well for sharpening knives, for example a 400 belt quickly gives a very sharp knife edge.

What is Cork Polishing?

Finishing belts with cork impregnated with silicon carbide. Gives a great satin finish and the belts last a very long time. The belts look rough because of the cork grains but give an incredibly fine and smooth finish.

What is Rapid Prep?

Rapid Prep: Belts that give a great smooth finish and last a long time. The fine ones can be used as a finish and the coarse ones can be used for deburring and rounding edges. Manufactured by Norton. If you have heard of Scotch Brite, this is about the same system.

What is Norax?

Norax from Norton Engineered Abrasives: Provides a fine, even finish. Used on hardened steel, for example, on the way to achieving a mirror polish. The belts have structures with abrasive that wear down as the belt is used so that new abrasive grains come to the surface. This gives you a smooth, fine cut and a fine surface throughout the life of the belt.

NOTE: Difference in price and quality

The belts are available in two different grades of abrasive and pattern, ceramic (U936) and aluminum oxide (U366). All of the belts here are made of ceramic abrasive (U936) except for X22 and X5 which are aluminum oxide based (U366). This is a massive price difference, but also a quality difference. If you are comparing our prices with others, please note which abrasive you are comparing with. If the store does not state the abrasive and is cheaper, you can safely assume that it is the cheaper U366 belts, but feel free to ask.

What is R929?

R929 Teal: High quality Norton abrasive mix. These last longer than aluminium oxide and cut cooler, are well suited for work from coarse up to 120 grit and will grind most materials.

What is Trizact?

Advanced sanding belts from 3M that are well suited for medium to fine sanding of steel and other metals. The belts have structured (built-up) abrasive that provides consistent sanding and finish throughout the life of the belt as the belt renews itself by shedding worn-out abrasive grains and revealing new abrasive grains.

GATOR : A type of Trizact belt with rectangular groupings of structured abrasives. Gator uses ceramic grains that are thicker and last even longer than regular Trizact.

What is Zirconia?

Zirconium abrasive is mixed with a special resin to create a belt that removes material quickly, grinds cooler than regular aluminum oxide, and lasts 4-5 times longer.
