Which epoxy yellows the least? Does epoxy fade and turn yellow?

Hanne asked us: "Will the epoxy turn yellow over time and which epoxy should I use to avoid that?"

Below you can read our response:

Hi Hanne!

There is a big difference in the degree of yellowing in casting epoxies. Many turn yellow almost before they are cast, and some take a while before they stabilize at a yellowing degree. The degree of yellowing also varies, some stabilize at a light tone while others become almost brownish. CCR epoxy from Storbua is one of the least yellowing epoxies due to its advanced UV filter and is widely used in paintings, see for example artist Kerstin Birkhem, but the short honest answer is that all epoxies yellow over time , especially if exposed to UV light. A UV filter is similar to sunscreen, something that filters out most, but not 100%, so it should not be in sunlight over time anyway. Epoxy that has been colored is much less susceptible to yellowing, even a little color helps, and thick layers of clear epoxy are much more susceptible than thin layers.

Considering that thin layers yellow less than thick casts, and colored epoxy will yellow less, it is not certain that it will be noticeable at first whether you are going to use the epoxy with added color or just have a thin layer on your painting. It will probably take many years before you will be able to see the difference from something that is freshly cast.

In addition, I can mention that yellowing is more difficult to see on a colored background (e.g. on a canvas or a countertop) than on a completely white background, so putting a thick clear layer of epoxy over a white background is usually not the best, in which case polyurethane varnish can be a good alternative.

So the conclusion is that CCR epoxy is a very good choice both for use with colors on a painting, and as a clear glossy layer.
